Poker Table Statistics Tips About

About

The main user interface for this web site is HTML, except for the poker table and surrounding background, which is a Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 control. The dynamic HTML, game logic, and the Silverlight graphics and animations are controlled by browser Javascript (not SilverLight 2.0 managed JScript). That includes generating all XAML from Javascript except for a small block of xaml stored inline with the html, which is used to initialize the Silverlight control with an empty canvas on startup.

The server program was written in python using the Google App Engine infrastructure. Charts are provided by the Google Chart API.

Certain HTML Widgets (e.g. TreeView) are from Yahoo’s User Interface Library. Javascript compression was done with the YUI Compressor.

Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo together... who says they can’t get along?

This game client was originally written as a Java applet, and that client has nearly the same graphics. This was set aside to explore the Silverlight approach which allows for unification of all client code in one code base. The java client is currently not available as it has not been kept up to date. A flash version may be written in the future.

This game was written by a Seattle based software developer as a hobby project.

Tips

Reloading the page will fix most problems. Hold down Ctrl and press R (or Apple-R on Mac).

After testing this game continuously with a linux, windows, and apple computer next to me over a period of many months, this has been my experience:

Among supported browsers, Safari looks the nicest, followed by Firefox, and then Internet Explorer.

Safari on Apple seems to be the most stable and snappy and can run for the longest periods of time (days) without trouble.

Firefox on Windows seems to be fairly snappy and stable due to the fast javascript engine of Firefox. However, there appears to be a progressive consumption of system resources. You may need to restart your browser to reclaim memory after a few hours. Firefox 3.x is preferred over Firefox 2.x because of a problem with using inlined xaml. To workaround that problem, I have to do an extra file request for Firefox 2.x on startup and I'd prefer not to do that. Also, certain features in the future will not work with Firefox 2.x due to this issue (so upgrade now).

Internet Explorer 6 and 7 on Windows run significantly slower than Firefox, due to it's inferior Javascipt engine performance. (In all fairness to Microsoft, they would recommend I change my code to managed JScript with a SilverLight 2.0 control which would be much, much faster.) You may need to restart IE after a period of hours if it slows down.

Firefox 3.0.1 on Fedora 9 with the Moonlight .8 control runs pretty choppy for me but it appears to be fully functional. While on Fedora 8, when I upgraded to Moonlight .8, I experienced a crashing bug with Firefox 2.0.0.13. Moonlight .7 works fine but that is not available without compiling it yourself. Therefore, Firefox 2.x on Fedora 8 is not supported since it does not work and there are upgrades available (FF 3.0.1 and Fedora 9) that do work.

Silverlight does not appear to support the Opera browser.

When using Moonlight, the frames rendered per second is displayed on the status bar by default. To disable this, right click the table graphic and select Properties from the Moonlight menu. On version 0.8, the checkbox is on the bottom of the properties list.

If this message does not go away in a few seconds, you do not have SilverLight installed!

Linux users: please click here to try the much talked about Moonlight from Novell. See Screen Shots of the game.

Silverlight / Moonlight is the latest animation and media player from Microsoft and Novell, respectively. You need this to watch videos and animation for sites using the free, state of the art Microsoft Silverlight (tm) media player. Go get it now for a better web experience!

Windows Users: Just click on the blue Silverlight graphic above to go to the Microsoft web site for installation. This only takes a few seconds on a broadband account. On Windows, choose "Open" not Save, when the download completes. Then you will be able to join the fun!
